Clemson Horticulture Internship Program
The Clemson Horticulture program’s internship experience is mandatory and is celebrated. Every student must complete HORT 2710 for three credits and may also earn credit for the Advanced Internship course HORT 4710.
Internships usually involve full time work for 10 weeks in the summer months. Students seek their own internship site and must complete an Internship Agreement Form with their employer that contains the start and stop dates, salary, and rotation of duties they will experience. Course requirements, include: writing two magazine articles; being evaluated by their supervisors twice; completing a web summary for online posting; and when they return to school they create and deliver an oral presentation, first to each other, and then to a class of students.
This final presentation exposes a new group of students to a potential internship site and experience. Students give the internship experience high marks as it allows them to make solid connections between the classroom and the field; and it provides insight into a future job which can lead to sound career choices.
The SCLTA is publishing several internship stories this year. The first one is from Dalton Holzheimer, who had the good fortune to work at The Greenery, Inc. in Hilton Head Island this summer.
